Whitney Wildcats varsity boys and girls teams win Sierra Foothill League finals
Whitney Wildcats’ varsity boys and girls teams absolutely crushed it at the Sierra Foothill League finals last Friday! The girls rocked it with a total of 174 points and the boys brought home the win with 159 points.
Let’s talk about the girls first – they were unstoppable! Ashanti Elie dominated the 100 meter race and high jump, while also being part of the 4x100-meter team with Jasmine Beasley, Phoenix Eastman and Nina Souto that finished with a lightning-fast time of 49.13 seconds. But that’s not all, Beasley also took the win in the 200-meter event, and junior Ava Kopec claimed victory in the 800 meters. And how about those Kopec sisters? Katie Kopec showed off her incredible stamina by winning both the 1,600 and 3,200-meter races. The 4x800-meter team of Ava Kopec, Isabel Soto, Addison Ewers and Grace Scott also finished first with an impressive time of 11:50. Plus, Annie Carlson won the shot put, and junior Juliana Roberson won the long jump and triple jump league titles for the second year in a row!
And speaking of Roberson, she’s absolutely thrilled with her achievements, but she’s not done yet. “It’s pretty exciting to be a league champion in my two main events but these are only stepping stones on the road to state,” she said. “My goal is to make it all the way to state and then peak when it matters most. I know that I have more in me that will take me even further.”
But the boys were just as impressive! Senior Xavier Bruce II was an absolute superstar, winning both the 100- and 200-meter races, as well as helping lead the 4x100-meter relay team to a win with John Dailey, Isaiah Bickham and Steven Cuevas. Dailey also won the 400 meters, while Mateo Delgadillo took the top spot in the 800 meters with a personal record of 1:56. The 4x800-meter relay team, consisting of Delgadillo, Callum Turner, Nick Herrmann and Jaden Rapp, also won with an amazing time of 9:16. And let’s not forget about junior Isaiah Brown, who won the triple jump!
