Sonoma Raceway hosted an exhilarating Toyota/Save Mart 350 today, culminating in a triumphant victory for Kyle Larson. This marks Larson's 26th victory in his 346-race NASCAR Cup Series career, his third win and eighth top finish in the 2024 season. Demonstrating his prowess on the track, this win also represents his second victory and fourth top 10 finish in 12 races at Sonoma Raceway, further solidifying his dominance this year with his fifth top 10 finish in 2024.
Michael McDowell secured second place, marking his third top 10 finish in 12 races at Sonoma Raceway and his fifth top 10 finish in the current season. Chris Buescher rounded out the top three, achieving his third top 10 finish in eight races at Sonoma Raceway. Zane Smith, finishing in sixteenth place, emerged as the highest-finishing rookie.

The race was not without its share of drama and challenges. Martin Truex Jr., who led the race until lap 102 when Larson overtook him, faced a heartbreaking setback. Truex ran out of gas just before the finish line and struggled to restart his car repeatedly, eventually managing to limp across the finish line to the applause of the crowd.

The event saw a total of eight cautions, just one shy of the track record of nine. Denny Hamlin's race ended abruptly on lap 6 due to a blown engine. A significant accident on lap 22 in Turn 3A caused substantial damage to several drivers, including Austin Hemric, Harrison Burton, Joey Logano (the pole winner), Chase Briscoe, and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. Another major pile-up on lap 39 in Turn 11 collected Josh Berry, Austin Dillon, Christopher Bell, William Byron, Cam Waters, Martin Truex Jr., and Erik Jones.
Tyler Reddick led the most laps, dominating 35 laps before finishing in eighth place. Chris Buescher led 32 laps, securing his third-place finish. Larson's crew chief, Cliff Daniels, emphasized their tire strategy and remained confident that another caution would not occur towards the end of the race. This strategy paid off as Larson steadily caught up to and eventually overtook Truex.

Reflecting on his victory, Larson said, "I figured the others would end up having to pit, but they just didn’t. But as I was slowly catching each one of them and then finally getting to Martin Truex Jr., it all just equalized and it worked out for us." He added, "I like being on offense, and that worked great in our strategy today. By being on offense, I made a lot fewer mistakes today. When you can win, no matter how you win, it’s really fun."
As the NASCAR Cup Series progresses, Larson now leads the points standings by 14 points over Chase Elliott. Fans eagerly anticipate the next race at Iowa Speedway for the Iowa Corn 350 Powered by Ethanol, scheduled for Sunday, June 16th, 2024, at 7 PM Eastern, 4 PM Pacific.
